Blogging for Profit – How to Rake In Cash Online Writing About Something You Love

July 1st, 2009

Thousands of folks are flocking to the Internet to put up their own blogs. These blogs can go over a practially infinite number of subjects – from muscle cars to kung fu, from politics to plumbing, and everything in between. It’s easy to see that the Internet has really made it possible for anyone to share their lives with the entire world.

Although blogging can be a lot fun (and somewhat cathartic in some cases), a large number of folks are creating blogs to actually make a healthy income from home. Using nothing but a computer, an Internet connection, and a bit of knowledge, these folks are blogging all the way to the bank. Just how are they able to do this while thousands upon thousands of bloggers out there are not making any cash to speak of?

As a general overview, making money from blogging requires three basic ingreidents:

Write Content and They Will Come

All blogs need to have content. Without any good content, visitors will never stay on your blog to read anything. Online, content is indeed king. To start, think about what you would like to be blogging about. Did you just get a new puppy and are trying to housebreak him? How about starting a blog that talks about the various housebreaking techniques you’ve tried? As you can probably tell, blogs can be about anything, and if you start one about something you love, chances are it will not even feel like work at all!

While writing your content, don’t stress yourself too much about perfect grammar. Usually, it’s best to forgo more formal language and insteaduse a more conversational style. Not only is this easier for the visitor to read and comprehend, but it will also infuse your blog with a bit of your own personality. Just write as if you were talking to a good friend at the laundrymat. Even if you don’t consider yourself a writer, you’ll find that the words flow quite easily with this method.

As for blogging tools, Google’s Blogger or the venerable Wordpress are good options.

Attracting Visitors

The second component of the blogging formula is traffic – how to get visitors to find and read the excellent content you’ve created in part one. There are essentially two methods to get traffic to your blog, and each has its pros and cons. Let’s look at both of these methods in turn:

Paid Traffic

This is generally done through advertising, such as banner advertising or pay-per-click. If you’ve got more money than time, this is an effective way to pull traffic to your blog in a relatively short period of time. You can set yourself up with a Google Adwords account and start bidding on keywords that relate to your blog’s topic. To help you think up keywords, you can use Google’s popular free keyword tool (https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal). In the beginning, try to find keywords that are “long tail” - keywords that are being searched for, but have relatively less competition. These are in most cases 3-5 word phrases instead of phrases of one or two keywords. This will keep your cost per click low as you test the feasibility of your new blog. While paid advertising can deliver traffic in a hurry, it is, of course, going to cost you some dough.

Free Traffic

The second option is to get free traffic. This way is not going to really cost you any cash per se, but it is a lot more time consuming compared to a paid traffic method. If you don’t have a pile of money to spend, learning how to get free traffic to your blog is a vital skill.

Monetization

As soon as you’ve got traffic coming to check out your blog, you now need to to monetize that traffic. One simple way to do this is by becoming an affiliate for a pre-existing product. Websites such as Commission Junction, Linkshare, and Clickbank make it easy to introduce other people’s products and make money every time you refer a sale. After you sign up for an account, you will gain access to a a boatload of products and services that you could be promoting on your blog.
